What the Ascendant represents in the birth chart

The Ascendant says how you arrive — and it is the one piece of the chart you never see, because the people who see it are everyone else. The Sun gives the theme of the life, the Moon says what you need, and the Ascendant is the door: what shows up in the first few minutes, before any introduction.

In practice, it is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the instant you were born. It is not a mask in the sense of a disguise — it is a way of coming in. It governs the first impression, the posture, the body's rhythm and the automatic reaction to new people.

And there are two things almost no text explains. The first: the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, and it depends on the city where you were born.
