What an aspect is in the birth chart

An aspect is the distance between two pieces of the chart, measured in degrees — and that is what says whether they work together, ignore each other or fight. The previous series describe each piece on its own: the planet in the sign, the planet in the house. This one describes what happens between two of them.

There are five distances that tradition calls the major aspects: the conjunction (0°), the sextile (60°), the square (90°), the trine (120°) and the opposition (180°). Each has its own way of putting two pieces in contact, and none of them is good or bad — what exists is what each one charges and what each one delivers.

And there is the number almost no text gives: the orb. Two pieces at exactly 90° form a square; at 97°, they form nothing. This blog uses 6 degrees for the major aspects, and outside that they are two pieces in the same chart, which is another thing. That is why an aspect is not found out from the date: it needs the calculated chart.

And there is a reading order that changes everything, and that almost no site respects: the aspect comes last. It describes the relationship between two pieces, and there is no reading the relationship without knowing both. Whoever arrives here without having read each piece in the sign and in the house is reading the conversation without knowing who is speaking.

What Mercury and Saturn mean together

The aspect between Mercury and Saturn says how much you weigh a sentence before saying it. Mercury is speech and thought. Saturn is what demands, cuts and charges. In contact, the two produce someone who does not open her mouth without being sure — which gives a rare precision and a slowness the person herself tends to call stupidity.

It is the most unfairly treated aspect in the series. Many adults who think of themselves as slow learners have this pair in the chart and a school memory: the question they did not ask for fear of looking silly, the exam they knew and did not write down in time.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: an aspect is a RELATIONSHIP, and not one more piece. It does not add a trait to your chart — it says how two traits already there get along with each other. It is worth saying in plain words, because it changes the reading for whoever recognises herself: this aspect does not describe low intelligence. It describes a strict filter between thinking and speaking — and a filter costs time.

It is worth giving the number before any reading, because without it there is no aspect: this blog uses a 6-degree orb for the major aspects. Outside that they are two pieces in the same chart, which is another thing. And the orb requires the calculated chart — and Saturn spends two and a half years in each sign, so what makes it individual is the house the two fall in, and that depends on the hour of birth.

The conjunction of Mercury and Saturn

The conjunction puts the weight inside the thinking: this person thinks slowly and deeply. She keeps what she has learned, builds long reasoning and writes better than she speaks. She is the person whose opinion the others wait for because, when it comes out, it tends to be finished.

The cost is the self-criticism that freezes her. She revises the sentence before saying it, revises it again, and the subject has already moved on. The fix is speaking before being ready in low-risk situations, on purpose, so the filter learns that not everything is an exam.

The easy aspects: sextile and trine of Mercury and Saturn

The sextile and the trine give rigour with no freeze: the person is exact and does not miss the moment to speak. She organises what the others cannot, plans well, can take long work and writes clearly. She is the one who fixes the team's confusing document and hands it back readable.

The cost is the little confrontation with her own doubt. Whoever always had mental structure never practised what to do when there is no answer — and tends to be far too bothered by a subject that will not organise itself.

The tense aspects: square and opposition of Mercury and Saturn

The square and the opposition set speech against demand — and out of that fight comes a person whose word is worth exactly what it says. The person keeps quiet for fear of being wrong, postpones a decision by asking for one more piece of data, and then charges herself for the delay. She tends to have been corrected early by somebody with authority, and the corrector's voice went on living inside.

The fix is a matter of exercise, and not of conversation: saying an opinion while it is still raw, somewhere safe, and observing that nothing happens. It is the cheapest way to show the filter that it is calibrated for a room that no longer exists.

The easy aspect has a cost, and the tense one has a gift

This is the inversion most texts do not make, and it holds for every pair: what runs with no friction was never tested, and what bothers is what produces. The trine between Mercury and Saturn delivers the result with no effort — and for that reason the person usually does not build the muscle, and finds that out on the day the ease is not enough. And the square delivers the opposite: a person who had to fight in order to speak, and whose word for that reason is worth more than that of someone who never doubted herself.

It matures late, and almost always after thirty. The Saturn return, around age 29, is the common landmark: the person finds herself teaching, writing or deciding for others, and discovers that the rigour that used to freeze her is the reason they seek her out.

Maturity here is not getting faster. It is the person no longer confusing care with incapacity — and charging the right price for what she knows.
