Lilith in Gemini in your chart

Lilith in Gemini: where you do not bend is the question you were not meant to ask. Why there are two Liliths and when it passed through Gemini.

What Lilith is

Lilith is not a celestial body: it is a point on the Moon's orbit. The Moon does not circle the Earth in a perfect circle but in an ellipse — so there is a point where it comes closest and a point where it goes farthest. The farthest point is the apogee, and that is what astrology calls Lilith, or the Black Moon.

There is nothing there to point a telescope at. It is a geometric position, like the Midheaven or the nodes — which does not make it any less calculable: it has an exact address in the zodiac at any instant, and this site works it out.

There are two Liliths, and they disagree in more than one chart out of three

This is the fact almost no text about Lilith mentions, and it changes what you read. The Moon's apogee can be worked out in two ways, and both have names:

The two methodsMean LilithTrue Lilith
Speed per dayalways 0.1114°from −3.59° to +6.31°
Does it go backwards?never, across 73,001 dayson 56% of days
Time in each sign269.3 days, alwaysback and forth

Measured day by day from 1930 to 2030, the two sit 10.89° apart on average, and reached 30.25° apart on 6 January 2017 — more than a whole sign. The upshot is that they land in different signs on 36.4% of days: more than one chart in three.

This site calculates mean Lilith, which is what most software uses. If another site shows a different sign from yours, most of the time nobody is wrong: it is the other Lilith.

Lilith spends 269 days in each sign, and treats all twelve alike

Lilith goes round the zodiac in 8.85 years and spends 269.3 days in each sign — about nine months. Counting the 270 complete passages between 1900 and 2100, that number is the same in all twelve signs down to the first decimal place.

That is rarer than it sounds. Chiron spends 8.00 years in Aries and 1.70 in Virgo — nearly five times as long in one as in the other. Mercury races and stalls. Mean Lilith does neither: it moves at one steady pace and never doubles back. It is the most regular point in the chart, and it is curious that astrology ties it to precisely what does not behave.

Nine months in a sign means that people born near you have the same Lilith. It is not a personal piece like the Ascendant, which changes every two hours — in scale it is closer to Jupiter: a mark of a cohort, not of an individual.

What it means to have Lilith in Gemini

With Lilith in Gemini, what does not bend in you is the question that was not supposed to be asked. You notice the contradiction and you say so. You see what nobody wants to name, and you name it — sometimes with humour, sometimes without, almost always at the worst possible moment. It is not calculated provocation: the sentence is already formed before you weigh up whether it fits.

The price is a reputation for a loose tongue, for irony, for not knowing when to stop. People with this Lilith usually have a childhood story of being told off for saying an obvious truth in front of people who would rather not hear it. The gain is that you are, often, the only person in the room who calls the thing by its name — and that, at certain moments, settles what years of diplomacy did not.

How Lilith in Gemini shows up day to day

This Lilith is recognisable by the kind of hush that follows after you speak. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

Notice what that list does not say. It does not say you are snide — it says that you notice the contradiction and cannot let it pass unnamed.

Lilith comes with the rest of the chart, and the calculation is free.

When Lilith passed through Gemini

Because it takes nine months in each sign and comes back every 8.85 years, you can find your own passage in a short list. These are the dates for mean Lilith — the one this site calculates — between 1940 and 2035:

The dates are in universal time, and the move from one sign to the next happens at an exact instant of the day. Anyone born on the day of the change needs the calculation with the birth time: the list is for locating the stretch, not for deciding the edge.

What Lilith in Gemini does not say about you

It is not your sex life, and it is not a list of flaws. Having Lilith in Gemini does not make anyone unkind. It describes where you do not give way — and plenty of people with this position are gentle about everything except letting a comfortable lie stand.

And it is the piece of the chart with the least agreement. Two serious programs disagree about its sign in more than one chart out of three — which is a good reason to read Lilith with a light hand. A chart with Lilith in Gemini and Venus in Libra is someone who does everything to keep the peace and still says the sentence that breaks it.

A limit said out loud, because it is part of reading seriously: none of this is prediction. Astrology describes tendency and gives vocabulary for what a person already lives — it does not determine what will happen, and nobody should be selling that.

Frequently asked questions about Lilith in Gemini

Does Lilith in Gemini mean I talk too much?

It is not about quantity, it is about subject. The position describes the kind of thing you cannot leave unsaid — the contradiction, the wrong figure, the unspoken. Plenty of people with this Lilith speak little and are still remembered for one sentence.

Why does my humour bother so many people?

Because it tends to point at what nobody wants to look at. Humour that makes everyone laugh leaves no mark; this one does, and the mark is what comes back as criticism.

Why does another site show my Lilith in a different sign?

Because there are two Liliths. The mean and the true are two ways of calculating the same point on the Moon's orbit, and they land in different signs on 36.4% of days — reaching 30° apart. This site calculates the mean, which is what most software uses. Neither is wrong; they are different calculations.

Is Lilith the same as the Black Moon?

It is the same point under two names. Black Moon is the older name for the lunar apogee — the point on the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth. There is also an asteroid named Lilith, which is a different thing and almost never what charts show.

Do I need my birth time to know my Lilith?

For the sign, hardly ever: it moves a little over a tenth of a degree per day, so the sign is only in doubt for someone born on the exact day of the change. For the house, yes — the house depends on the time, as it does for any point in the chart.

Is there such a thing as retrograde Lilith?

The mean never goes retrograde: across 73,001 days measured, it always moved forward. The true one is retrograde on 56% of days — more than half. If your chart marks Lilith retrograde, it is using the true one.

Lilith in the 12 signs

The Sun in the 12 houses

The sign says how; the house says where. It is the piece that depends most on the exact time of birth.

Mercury in the 12 signs

Your Mercury is in your Sun's sign, the one before or the one after — and it is what explains why two people of the same sign think so differently.

Venus in the 12 signs

Your Venus is in your Sun's sign, in the two before it or the two after it — and it is what explains why two people of the same sign love so differently.

Jupiter in the 12 signs

The Sun is your most personal piece; Jupiter is the least — it stays a year in each sign, and whoever was born alongside you has the same one. That is where life tends to open space.
