What an aspect is in the birth chart
An aspect is the distance between two pieces of the chart, measured in degrees — and that is what says whether they work together, ignore each other or fight. The previous series describe each piece on its own: the planet in the sign, the planet in the house. This one describes what happens between two of them.
There are five distances that tradition calls the major aspects: the conjunction (0°), the sextile (60°), the square (90°), the trine (120°) and the opposition (180°). Each has its own way of putting two pieces in contact, and none of them is good or bad — what exists is what each one charges and what each one delivers.
And there is the number almost no text gives: the orb. Two pieces at exactly 90° form a square; at 97°, they form nothing. This blog uses 6 degrees for the major aspects, and outside that they are two pieces in the same chart, which is another thing. That is why an aspect is not found out from the date: it needs the calculated chart.
And there is a reading order that changes everything, and that almost no site respects: the aspect comes last. It describes the relationship between two pieces, and there is no reading the relationship without knowing both. Whoever arrives here without having read each piece in the sign and in the house is reading the conversation without knowing who is speaking.
What Mercury and Uranus mean together
The aspect between Mercury and Uranus says the speed at which your idea arrives. Mercury is thought. Uranus is what breaks and gives no warning. In contact, the two produce someone whose idea arrives whole and all at once — without the route that led to it, and for that reason hard to explain to whoever asks how you got there.
It is the aspect of the leap: the person skips steps and gets it right, which looks like magic from outside and is uncomfortable from inside, because she herself cannot retrace the route when somebody asks.

And the orb requires the calculated chart — and Uranus spends seven years in each sign, so its sign belongs to your whole generation: it is Mercury's position that decides whether there is an aspect, and it changes within days.
The conjunction of Mercury and Uranus
The conjunction puts the rupture inside the thinking: this person thinks in leaps. She has the idea in the middle of another conversation, solves a technical problem by a route nobody tried and gets bored with step-by-step explanations. She tends to be interested in subjects her classmates found odd.
The cost is impatience with everyone else's pace, and it is expensive at work: the person is already three steps ahead, answers step three and the other person is still on step one. It looks like arrogance and it almost never is.
The easy aspects: sextile and trine of Mercury and Uranus
The sextile and the trine give originality with no friction: the person innovates and still gets understood. She has good ideas and knows how to translate them, learns a new tool without a manual and is sought out when an old process jams. Her mind is fast and still able to teach.
The cost is never having been forced to slow down. Whoever was always followed in her own ideas never learned to defend an unpopular one — and freezes precisely when the good idea depends on convincing somebody who does not want to listen.
The tense aspects: square and opposition of Mercury and Uranus
The square and the opposition set thought against haste — and out of that fight comes an original person other people can follow. The person changes subject halfway, drops a project on the day it stops being new and disagrees by reflex before examining what was said. Her mind moves faster than life can take.
The fix is anchoring: writing the idea down before telling it, and choosing one to carry to the end. It is not generic discipline — it is the only way for the leap to turn into a result, and not into a collection of beginnings.

This is the inversion most texts do not make, and it holds for every pair: what runs with no friction was never tested, and what bothers is what produces. The trine between Mercury and Uranus delivers the result with no effort — and for that reason the person usually does not build the muscle, and finds that out on the day the ease is not enough. And the square delivers the opposite: a person who had to learn to show the route, and who for that reason can take others up to where she already was.

It matures when the person learns to show the route she skipped. It usually happens when she needs to sell an idea to somebody with decision-making power, and discovers that the idea on its own convinces nobody.
Maturity here is not thinking more slowly. It is the person rebuilding the route after the leap, so whoever comes behind can climb it.

How do I find out whether I have this aspect in my chart?
Only with the calculated chart. An aspect is a distance in degrees, and a degree cannot be estimated from the date: the two pieces have to be within 6 degrees of the exact distance for the aspect to exist. It is different from the sign, which the date gives — and it is why this series asks for the chart before any reading.
Is a tense aspect bad and an easy aspect good?
No, and that is the reading this blog refuses on every page. The easy aspect runs with no friction and for that reason was never tested — the person usually does not build the muscle, and finds that out on the day the ease is not enough. The tense one bothers, and it is the bother that produces. The biographies worth reading tend to be full of squares.
Is Mercury with Uranus a sign of intelligence?
It is a sign of speed and of leaping, which is not the same thing. The idea arrives whole and without the route, which gets a lot right and is hard to explain. What turns that into a result is rebuilding the route afterwards — and that part is work.
Why do I abandon projects halfway?

It counts, and more weakly the further it is from the exact degree. An aspect 1 degree off is a central piece of the chart; at 5 and a half degrees, it is one more trait. And that is why the difference between a calculated chart and an estimated one shows up here before it shows up anywhere else.
