What Chiron is, and where it sits

Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977. It is neither a planet nor an ordinary asteroid — it is a centaur, the first of a class nobody knew existed until Charles Kowal found this one.

And its position can be measured. At its closest to the Sun it reaches 8.39 astronomical units, which is inside Saturn's orbit; at its farthest, 18.87, which is Uranus's orbit. When tradition calls Chiron a bridge between the two, that is not a pretty image: it is the geometry of the orbit, and it is the one place in astrology where the reading matches what the telescope sees.

A full orbit takes 50.07 years, measured and not rounded. That is what makes the Chiron return land at roughly the same age for everyone, and the page comes back to it further down.

Why Chiron spends 4.07 years in Capricorn, and not the same time in every sign

Chiron's orbit is lopsided, and so it does not split those fifty years into twelve equal parts. Near the Sun it races; far away it crawls. Measured with this site's ephemeris:

• In Aries it stays 8.00 years, which is where the orbit is farthest from the Sun.
• In Virgo it stays 1.70 years, at the closest point to the Sun.
• In Capricorn, yours, it stays 4.07 years.

That has a consequence almost no text draws: the same point in the chart is generational in one sign and almost personal in another. Anyone with Chiron in Aries shares the sign with nine whole years of births; anyone with it in Virgo, with two.

Capricorn sits in the middle of the scale: four years of births.

What it means to have Chiron in Capricorn

Chiron in Capricorn sits in authority — in holding a place of responsibility without feeling like an impostor. Anyone with this Chiron learned early that authority fails. It may have been an absent or overly hard father, a household where the child had to be the adult, or a setting where a mistake had public consequences. The lesson stuck: giving orders is dangerous, and taking them is too.

In the adult this becomes a crooked relationship with hierarchy: difficulty accepting a boss, greater difficulty being one, and the persistent sense that somebody is going to find out they should not be there. Since the orbit takes 50.07 years, the Chiron return lands at almost the same age for everyone — which is true of almost no other cycle in the chart. The Saturn return arrives at twenty-nine and a half, Jupiter's every twelve years, and the nodal one at eighteen and a half; Chiron's arrives once only, and it arrives near fifty.

With Chiron in Capricorn, the return at fifty tends to coincide with a turn in the career or with an old authority leaving the stage — a father, a boss, an institution. It is the age at which the person usually takes, at last, a place that was always theirs.

What Chiron in Capricorn does not say about you

It does not describe a trauma, and it should not be read as if it did. It does not say you will fail in your career, nor that you had a bad father. It says there is an area where authority and responsibility carry an old weight — and that it is there that you are good at holding what other people drop.

The house it fell in changes the address: with Chiron in house 10 this is literally the career and your reputation; in house 6, it shows up in the boss, the colleague and the work routine. And since Capricorn holds Chiron for 4.07 years, anyone born in that span has the same one — what individualizes it is the house, which depends on the exact time of birth.
