What the house of Mars says in your birth chart
The sign of Mars says HOW you fight; the house says WHERE your force is spent. They are two different questions, and the second is almost never asked. Mars in Capricorn describes somebody who acts with method and does not give up; Mars in Capricorn in the 6th house describes that same force turning into a tireless worker, and in the 7th it describes the same person negotiating hard with the one she loves. It is another life, with the same sign.
Here the series changes its rule, and it is worth noticing. The house of Mercury and that of Venus are almost always the Sun's or a neighbour of it, because both walk tied to it. Mars is tied to nothing: it can fall in any of the twelve houses, including the one opposite the Sun. That is why this is the reading that most explains what the Sun sign was not explaining.
And there is one thing the house of Mars says that no other says: that is where you have a scar. Mars is the planet of the cut, the accident, the surgery and the fight — its house tends to mark the area of life in which the person got hurt, defended herself and learned to fight. And the hard difference of this series has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. The strength is initiative: this person starts. She makes the first move the others keep postponing — the call, the offer, the hard conversation — and since almost everything in adult life jams exactly there, that is an enormous and poorly recognised advantage.
In practice that turns into three useful things: an ability to start from zero that solves a career and a move to another city; a real physical courage, the kind that acts in an emergency while the others freeze; and a presence nobody ignores, which in a negotiation is worth a great deal.
That strength does best in any work of opening, sport, emergency, building, field sales, leading the start of a project and physical craft. And it does badly in an environment of long waiting, in a post where you have to swallow every day and in any arrangement where taking the lead is treated as rudeness.
What are the challenges of Mars in the 1st house
There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is initiative turning into running people over, and the deficiency is somebody who switched the engine off precisely in this area of life. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces — the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency —, and it is the last of them that hardly any text mentions.
The excess is acting before listening: the person answers mid-sentence, decides without consulting and then spends the week repairing what haste ruined. It also shows up in the body — a silly accident, a cut finger, a twisted ankle, and always with haste involved.
The deficiency is the opposite and goes unnoticed for years: the person stopped reacting here, and calls that patience. Here she is the person who learned that her own force frightens. At some point somebody got a fright from her and she believed the problem was her size — and started entering sideways, asking permission to exist, swallowing the answer. Every house has a pair, and the pair of 1 is house 7. They are not separate themes: they are the two ends of the same axis, and the excess in one shows up as a lack in the other. The 7th house is the other person: partnership, association, marriage. A Mars in the 1st very used to deciding alone empties precisely the house that needs agreement — because whoever acts first never agrees beforehand.
And the pair charges for it: this person's relationships usually have a single complaint, repeated for years, and it is “you decided without me”. The repair is small and tedious — asking before acting, once a day — and it changes the whole relationship.

By calculating the chart with date, hour and city. The hour is no detail here: without it there are no houses, and any site that shows houses without asking for the hour is using midday as a guess. If you do not have the exact hour, the sign of Mars still holds in full — what cannot be asserted is the house.
And if I do not know the exact time of my birth?
It is worth looking for the birth certificate, which in Brazil usually carries the hour, or the registry office where it was filed. With a range of hours you can rule out some houses and be left with two or three — which is already different from guessing. And there is an honest check: read the two candidate houses and see in which of them your life gave more fight.
Does Mars in the 1st house mean I am aggressive?
It means your energy arrives before you do, and that is read from outside as aggression far more often than matches what you felt. Aggression is intent; what this placement describes is intensity. The useful part is knowing about the effect, because knowing it already settles half the misunderstandings it causes.
