What the house of Mars says in your birth chart

The sign of Mars says HOW you fight; the house says WHERE your force is spent. They are two different questions, and the second is almost never asked. Mars in Capricorn describes somebody who acts with method and does not give up; Mars in Capricorn in the 6th house describes that same force turning into a tireless worker, and in the 7th it describes the same person negotiating hard with the one she loves. It is another life, with the same sign.

Here the series changes its rule, and it is worth noticing. The house of Mercury and that of Venus are almost always the Sun's or a neighbour of it, because both walk tied to it. Mars is tied to nothing: it can fall in any of the twelve houses, including the one opposite the Sun. That is why this is the reading that most explains what the Sun sign was not explaining.

And there is one thing the house of Mars says that no other says: that is where you have a scar. Mars is the planet of the cut, the accident, the surgery and the fight — its house tends to mark the area of life in which the person got hurt, defended herself and learned to fight. It is not an omen, and it should not be read as a warning: it is where the biography already has a history.

And the hard difference of this series has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. The whole chart turns about one degree every four minutes, and a house boundary passes in around two hours. Whoever guesses the time does not get an approximate reading — they get somebody else's reading.

What it means to have Mars in the 7th house

Having Mars in the 7th house means you fight with the one you love, and that is how you come close. The 7th house is the other person: partnership, marriage, association. Mars there puts the force into the encounter. This person has no lukewarm relationship — either there is heat, or it does not interest her — and the friction is usually part of the bond, and not a sign that it is going to end.

It is a badly read placement, because it looks like a defect and is a design. Whoever has it comes close by arguing: the hard conversation is the way of getting near, and the relationship that never disagrees is, for this person, usually a relationship with nobody in it.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: the scar of this placement is one of partnership, and it is usually specific. A relationship in which the person took a beating — from arguing, from betrayal, from a partnership that broke. What stayed was not a fear of loving: it was a radar. She feels the conflict before it exists, and sometimes starts the fight she was only foreseeing.

There is a second piece that changes everything: which sign that Mars is in — the way that force is spent in this area. Mars in the 7th house in Aries argues loudly and it passes fast; in Cancer, it keeps the grudge and collects months later, when the other person has already forgotten. The house says WHERE; the sign says HOW.

How Mars in the 7th house shows up day to day

It shows in the place conflict occupies inside this person's relationships. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

Notice what this list does not say. It does not say the person is quarrelsome or incapable of living with anyone — two labels this placement carries and which describe the excess, not the placement. It says her force is spent on the ground of the encounter with the other person.

What are the strengths of Mars in the 7th house

The strength is useful confrontation: this person puts the subject on the table. She says what is not working while it can still be fixed, and since most relationships die of a postponed subject, that courage saves bonds — including bonds the other person had already given up on saving.

In practice that turns into three useful things: an ability to negotiate head-on that closes a deal good for both sides; a willingness for the hard conversation that avoids the break-up by accumulation; and a force that shows up precisely when the other person needs somebody who will face things.

That strength does best in negotiation, law, real conflict mediation, a partnership with clear rules, doubles sport and any work done face to face. And it does badly in an environment where disagreeing is rude, in an arrangement with no rules and in any relationship that only works when nothing is said.

What are the challenges of Mars in the 7th house

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is confrontation turning into the only language, and the deficiency is somebody who switched the engine off precisely in this area of life. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces — the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency —, and it is the last of them that hardly any text mentions.

The excess is fighting in order to feel close: the person creates friction when the relationship is calm, because calm sounds like distance. It also shows up in the choice of partner — a sequence of difficult people, each one explained as a coincidence, and all of them with the same size of fight.

The deficiency is the opposite and goes unnoticed for years: the person stopped reacting here, and calls that patience. Here she is the person who decided not to fight any more. After a relationship that ground her down, she started giving way in everything to keep the peace — and lives in a polite arrangement in which she does not appear. From outside it is maturity. Inside it is a person who vanished from inside her own relationship, and it is the most expensive loss of this placement.

Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: a confrontation that needs a subject, and not less courage. It is not solved by asking the person to give way — giving way here does not produce peace, it produces absence. It is solved by separating the two things: fighting for what matters, and letting the rest go. There is one question, and it comes before starting: will this matter a month from now — and that is what the sign of Mars and the rest of the chart show.

This does not show up the same way in two people with Mars in the 7th house. What changes is which sign it is in, whether it was born retrograde and how it gets along with the rest of the chart.

The opposite house, which nobody reads alongside

Every house has a pair, and the pair of 7 is house 1. They are not separate themes: they are the two ends of the same axis, and the excess in one shows up as a lack in the other. The 1st house is the opposite: yourself. A Mars in the 7th much spent on the other person usually has little force left over for himself — he disputes for the marriage, for the partner, for the client, and does not dispute for himself.

The exercise is small and difficult: using, once a week, the same grit on your own behalf. Whoever does that discovers the force was never the other person's, it was hers all along.

How Mars in the 7th house evolves over time

It matures when the person discovers that disagreeing does not push people away — and that discovery is worth more than any attempt to learn to avoid conflict. The courage to face things stays the talent; what changes is that it stops looking for a reason.

There are two rhythms that help to understand the arc, and both belong to Mars itself: the return, every two years, which turns the cycle of this house and calls for a fresh start; and the retrogradation, every twenty-six months, for some nine weeks. In those weeks the subject of this house tends to ask for review — and here they usually bring back an old partnership or a badly settled dispute. It is a good moment to renegotiate a contract, and a bad moment to give an ultimatum.

Maturity here is not learning to swallow it. It is the person coming to distinguish the fight that brings people closer from the fight that only discharges. A mature Mars in the 7th house goes on facing things, and comes to choose the subject — and it is that choice that turns friction into partnership.

No honest text gives an age for this. The arc depends on the whole chart and on the life the person had.

What Mars in the 7th house does not say about you

It says where your force is spent, and not whether you will win the fight. The house is the address; the result is your life.

Which sign that Mars is in changes the whole manner: Mars in the 7th house in Capricorn negotiates coldly and wins without raising its voice; in Gemini, it argues for pleasure and does not understand why the other person took it seriously. See the series Mars in the 12 signs.

And your Sun does not help you guess this house, unlike what happens with Mercury and Venus: Mars falls in any of the twelve. The other half of the pair is Venus — she shows what attracts, and Mars, what gets done about it. See the series Venus in the 12 houses.

One limit said out loud, because it is part of reading seriously: none of this is prediction. Astrology describes a tendency and gives vocabulary for what the person already lives; it does not announce an accident, does not promise victory and does not replace your own decision.

Frequently asked questions about Mars in the 7th house

How do I find out which house my Mars is in?

By calculating the chart with date, hour and city. The hour is no detail here: without it there are no houses, and any site that shows houses without asking for the hour is using midday as a guess. If you do not have the exact hour, the sign of Mars still holds in full — what cannot be asserted is the house.

And if I do not know the exact time of my birth?

It is worth looking for the birth certificate, which in Brazil usually carries the hour, or the registry office where it was filed. With a range of hours you can rule out some houses and be left with two or three — which is already different from guessing. And there is an honest check: read the two candidate houses and see in which of them your life gave more fight.

Does Mars in the 7th house mean I am going to get divorced?

No. There is no chart placement that announces a divorce, and whoever says so is selling fear. What this placement describes is a partnership with friction inside it — and friction spoken ends in agreement, friction swallowed ends in a break-up. The useful information is not about the ending: it is about which of the two roads you are taking now.

Why do I only feel close after an argument?

Because for this placement confrontation is the form of contact: arguing is the moment when both people are really there, with no politeness in between. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as the fight has a subject. What wears things down is the fight with no theme, created only to feel the other person's presence — and it is recognisable: the next day nobody remembers what it was about.

What is the difference between the sign and the house of Mars?

The sign is the manner; the house is the place. Mars in Aries acts before thinking, wherever it is; in the 2nd house that becomes somebody who buys on impulse and earns money fast, and in the 9th it becomes whoever drops everything and changes country. The sign you read once; the house explains why two people with the same Mars spend the same force on unrecognisable lives.

Does the house of Mars say where I get hurt?

It says where your life tends to have friction, and tradition also reads that as accident and surgery. Here the reading is another one, and it is more useful: it is the area in which you learned to defend yourself, and that is why it is also the one you defend harder than the subject asks for. It is not a forecast of injury — it is the address of your fastest reaction.

This one cannot be found from the date or from the sign: the twelve houses are counted from the Ascendant, and the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours and depends on the CITY where you were born. With no time and no place there is no house at all — not even an approximate one. You can calculate it for free here.
