The Sun sign is where your life grows. It is the project: the direction you take when nobody is giving the orders. It comes from the date alone.
The Moon sign is what you feel before you think. It is the reaction, the need, what came from home and what soothes. It changes every two and a half days, so it needs the time in most cases.
The Ascendant is how you arrive. It is the doorway: what other people meet before they know you. It changes roughly every two hours, and it needs the time and the city.
None of the three is truer than the others. They answer different questions, and that is why reading only one is reading a third.
Why so many people say “I do not identify with my sign”
Because almost always the person is describing the Moon or the Ascendant, and comparing it with the text for the Sun. It is the most common confusion there is, and it has two faces.
The first: the Sun is the piece you earn. It describes a grown adult well and describes a twenty-year-old badly, someone still living what came from home — and what came from home is the Moon. Many people who say “I am nothing like this” at twenty-five read the same text at forty and say “now yes”.
The second: other people describe you by your Ascendant, and you describe yourself by your Sun. That is where the feeling that nobody sees who you are comes from. Someone with the Sun in Pisces and Capricorn rising is read as tough by the whole room and feels the opposite inside — and both readings are right, each about its own piece.
What each one needs in order to be calculated
This is where the difference stops being a concept and becomes a practical requirement.

The Moon sits halfway on purpose: she changes every two and a half days, so on twenty-eight days out of thirty her sign is the same from the start of the day to the end. On the other two she turns in the middle and the time decides. That is why an honest site calculates the Moon without a time and says when the day is a turning one, instead of faking certainty.
The Ascendant has no approximate version. Without a time and a city it could be in any of the twelve, and a site that returns one of them chose noon on your behalf.
An example with the three together
Two people born on the same day, with the same Sun in Taurus.
The first has the Moon in Scorpio and Gemini rising. She arrives light, talks fast, makes friends in any queue — that is the Ascendant. She builds slowly, wants security and does not let go of what is hers — that is the Sun. And she feels everything at extreme depth, with a jealousy she herself finds excessive — that is the Moon. From outside she looks sociable and calm. Inside, she is neither.
The second has the Moon in Pisces and Capricorn rising. Same Sun, same wish to build and to have stability — and a dry, formal arrival that makes people think she is older than she is. And an emotion that dissolves into the other person, that cries at films and cannot say where she ends and the other begins.

Which of the three is my “real” sign?
All three are yours. The question assumes one is real and the others are accessories, and it does not work that way: the Sun is the direction of your life, the Moon is your reaction and the Ascendant is your arrival. When someone asks “what is your sign” in the everyday sense, the answer is the Sun — but on its own it describes a third.
Why am I not like my Sun sign?
Two reasons, and both are common. The first: the Sun is the piece you earn, and before thirty many people are still living the Moon, which is what came from home. The second: other people describe you by your Ascendant, so the image coming back from outside belongs to another piece. Reading the three together clears up most of that strangeness.
Do I need the time to know my Moon sign?
On most days, no: the Moon spends two and a half days in each sign, so on twenty-eight days out of thirty her sign is the same all day. On two out of thirty she turns in the middle of the day, and there the time decides. A serious calculation tells you when your case is one of those.
Does the rising sign change with age?
No. It was fixed at the instant of birth, like the rest of the chart. What changes with age is the relative weight of the pieces in your life: the Ascendant tends to dominate first impressions for a lifetime, and the Sun becomes more recognisable as a person chooses their own direction.
If my Sun and Ascendant are in the same sign, does that intensify it?
It concentrates, which is different from intensifying. The person is read from outside the same way they feel inside, and that usually gives a comfortable coherence — and a blind spot, because the second reading that normally questions the first is missing.
