Find your sign by date of birth

The calculation uses the same ephemeris that builds this site's birth charts, and it covers anyone born between 1900 and 2100.

What your date of birth answers, and what it does not

The date on its own answers one thing: which sign the Sun was in when you were born. It is true information and it is very little — one twelfth of humanity was born in the same stretch you were, and nobody thinks they know five hundred million people because of it.

What the date does not answer is the rest of the chart. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so it depends on the time; the Ascendant changes every two hours and depends on the city as well; the twelve houses come out of the Ascendant, so they do not exist without a time and a place. Someone with only the date has the Sun, and the Sun is one piece out of ten.

It is still worth knowing, and worth knowing precisely — because the answer going around out there is wrong in one case out of ten, and it is always wrong about the same people.

Why the table of signs you have seen is wrong

Because it pretends the change happens on the same day every year, and it does not. The Sun enters Aries at the instant of the equinox, and that instant moves: each year it arrives about six hours later than the year before, until a leap year pushes it back a day. The twelve borders do the same dance, and the result is that none of them falls on a fixed day.

Here is an example you can check. Every printed table says Sagittarius begins on 22 November.

Anyone born in São Paulo on 22 November 1995, at three in the afternoon, has read all their life that they are a Sagittarius — and they are a Scorpio. That year the Sun only entered Sagittarius at 17:01, and the country was on summer time, which shifts the sum by another hour. That person stayed on this side of the line by two hours.

This is what the tool at the top of this page does differently: it has no table of dates. It has the 2,436 instants at which the Sun changes sign between 1900 and 2100, each one calculated with the same ephemeris the site uses to build a chart — and checked against the equinoxes and the solstices, which are exactly four of those changes.

The real ranges, measured for anyone born between 1930 and 2025, are these:

SignThe Sun entersThe Sun leaves
Aries20 or 21 March18, 19 or 20 April
Taurus19, 20 or 21 April19, 20 or 21 May
Gemini20, 21 or 22 May19, 20 or 21 June
Cancer20, 21 or 22 June21 or 22 July
Leo22 or 23 July21, 22 or 23 August
Virgo22, 23 or 24 August21, 22 or 23 September
Libra22, 23 or 24 September21, 22 or 23 October
Scorpio22, 23 or 24 October20, 21 or 22 November
Sagittarius21, 22 or 23 November20 or 21 December
Capricorn21 or 22 December18, 19 or 20 January
Aquarius19, 20 or 21 January17 or 18 February
Pisces18 or 19 February19 or 20 March

Notice that there is not one row with a fixed date. That is why a border day cannot be settled by any table: it is settled by the time of day.

What the Sun sign really says

The Sun is the project of a life: where you grow when nobody is giving the orders. It is not your mood, nor the way you talk, nor the first impression you make — each of those has another owner in the chart. The Sun is the direction.

That is why the Sun sign describes a grown adult well and a child badly: the Sun is the piece you earn. At twenty most of us are still living the Moon, which is what came from home. The Sun arrives later, and it arrives by choice.

And it describes the HOW, not the WHERE. Two people with the Sun in Leo can have lives that look nothing alike: one with the Sun in house 6, spending the shine on a daily craft; another in house 10, spending the same shine on a public post. The sign is the same and the life is not.

A Sun sign is not a birth chart

Reading only the Sun sign is reading one letter of a name. The chart has ten bodies, twelve houses, an Ascendant and the aspects between all of it — and it is the combination that describes someone, not the piece on its own.

Two people of the same Sun sign can be opposites at the dinner table. One has the Sun in Libra with Mars in Aries: the most diplomatic person in the room and the one who fights worst when they finally fight. The other has the same Sun in Libra with Mars in Pisces, and disappears from a conflict before it starts. The Sun sign does not tell the two apart. The chart does.

That is why a magazine horoscope sounds vague: it is written for one twelfth of the population. It is not that astrology is vague — it is that a single piece is vague, and nobody told that to the person reading it.

What to read once you know your sign

The text for your Sun sign is in the table above, and it is the natural next step: it describes the direction of your life in the detail that a one-line answer has no room for.

After that, two paths are worth more than any other. The first is the Moon through the 12 signs, which is the piece that describes what you feel before you think — and the one most people recognise faster than their own Sun. The second is the Ascendant through the 12 signs, which is how you arrive before you open your mouth. Both need the birth time, and that is where the date on its own reaches the end of what it can say.

Frequently asked questions about finding your sign by date of birth

I was born on the day the sign changed. How do I find mine?

With the time of day. The tool at the top of this page gives the exact instant the Sun changed sign that day, in the time zone you pick — if you were born before that moment, you belong to the previous sign. On a border day there is no answer without the time, and any text that gives one is guessing.

Does my sign change from one year to the next?

Yours never changes: it was fixed at the instant you were born. What changes from year to year is the date each sign begins. Someone born on 20 April can be an Aries in one year and a Taurus in another, and both are right for both people.

Do I need my birth time to know my Sun sign?

In 93 out of every 100 dates, no: the Sun spends about thirty days in each sign, and the answer is the same in any time zone on the planet. In the other 7, yes — those are the days the sign changes, and there the time decides. The tool on this page only asks for the time when it actually makes a difference.

Are there thirteen signs? What about Ophiuchus?

No, and the confusion has a simple explanation. The zodiac Western astrology uses is not made of constellations: it divides the circle into twelve equal 30-degree slices starting at the equinox. Ophiuchus is a constellation, and constellations come in irregular sizes — they are a different thing, with a different purpose. The twelve signs are a measure of time, not a drawing in the sky.

What is the difference between my sign, my rising sign and my Moon sign?

They are three different pieces of the same chart. The Sun sign is the direction of your life and comes from the date. The Moon sign is what you feel before you think, changes every two and a half days and needs the time. The Ascendant is how you arrive, changes every two hours and needs the time and the city. People who mix the three think astrology contradicts itself — it is only talking about different things.
