What the rising sign is, in one sentence
The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the instant and in the place where you were born. It is not a planet and not one more sign: it is a point, and it is the point from which the whole chart begins to be counted.
While the Sun takes a month to change sign and the Moon takes two and a half days, the Ascendant changes in about two hours. It is the piece in the whole chart that depends most on the clock — and with it, the twelve houses, which are counted from it.
That is why almost no site treats the Ascendant seriously: finding it means asking for more than the date, and asking for more costs you the people who give up on the form.
Why it needs the time AND the city
The Earth turns one degree every four minutes. Fifteen minutes of error in the time shift the Ascendant by three to five degrees, depending on which sign was rising; a whole hour shifts it by thirteen to twenty, which is half a sign or more. A chart built on a guessed time is not an approximate chart — it is somebody else's chart.
The city comes in for a reason almost nobody explains: the speed at which each sign rises depends on latitude. The twelve do not take two hours each. “Two hours” is twenty-four divided by twelve, and reality is far less round than that.
In São Paulo, with today's obliquity, this is how long each sign takes to cross the horizon:

Taurus takes 2h16 and Virgo takes 1h31 — forty-five minutes between the slowest and the fastest. Anyone born with Virgo rising had a much narrower window than someone born with Taurus, and that changes how much an uncertain time gets in the way.
And the list is not the same everywhere. In Porto Alegre the gap widens further (1h24 against 2h21); in Manaus, nearly on the equator, it almost disappears (1h48 against 2h09). In Lisbon, in the northern hemisphere, the order reverses: there the slowest is Leo, at 2h30, and the fastest is Pisces, at 1h13. The same sky, read from another latitude, rises at another rhythm.
How to find your rising sign
There are three steps, and only the first is any work.
Find the time. It is usually on the birth certificate — a reissued copy carries the field, and it is almost always filled in. If it is not, look on the maternity card or booklet, and then in the hospital's records, which in many places are kept for decades. If nothing turns up, the page about not knowing your birth time tells you what can still be done.
Find the city. The city of birth, not the one you live in today. What matters is the latitude and longitude of the place where you were at that instant.

What the rising sign really says
The Ascendant is how you arrive. It is the doorway: what other people meet before they know you, and also the filter through which you meet the world. It describes the entrance, and the entrance of a house is not the house.
It rules house 1 — the body, the appearance, the initiative, the start of anything — and so it tends to show up in the way someone walks, the kind of clothes they wear, the first sentence they say in a new room. Someone with Capricorn rising arrives contained and is read as serious before opening their mouth; someone with Leo rising arrives taking up space even when they would rather not.

The rising sign is not a mask
The idea that the Ascendant is a “social mask” is the most common reading and the laziest. A mask assumes there is a true face hidden behind it, and that the person is pretending. That is not what happens.
The Ascendant is as much yours as the Sun. The difference is one of FUNCTION, not of authenticity: the Sun is where life grows, and the Ascendant is where it comes in and goes out. Someone with the Sun in Pisces and Virgo rising is not a Pisces disguised as a Virgo — they are someone who organises the world so they can dream inside it.
The honest reading is this: both are lit the whole time, and the discomfort many people feel between them is not a mask slipping. It is the normal distance between what someone wants to build and the way they arrive.
Frequently asked questions about the rising sign
Does the rising sign really change every two hours?
Two hours is the average. The real figure depends on latitude: in São Paulo, Taurus takes 2h16 to rise and Virgo takes 1h31, a difference of forty-five minutes. In Lisbon the order reverses, with Leo taking 2h30 and Pisces 1h13. That is why the city of birth goes into the calculation along with the time.
Can I know my rising sign without my birth time?
Not honestly. Without the time, the Ascendant could be in any of the twelve signs, and a site that hands you one of them is guessing with the face of an answer. What does exist are ways to narrow the doubt — rectification, which starts from dated facts of a life — and those are consultation work, not form work.
What is the difference between the rising sign and the Sun sign?
They are different pieces. The Sun sign is the direction of your life and comes from the date. The Ascendant is the degree rising on the horizon at the instant of birth, and it comes from the date, the time and the city. The first says where you grow; the second, how you arrive.
I got the time wrong by fifteen minutes. Does that change anything?
It changes the Ascendant by three to five degrees, depending on which sign was rising. That rarely changes the sign, but it shifts the cusps of the twelve houses — and a shifted cusp moves any planet sitting near it into another house. For the sign of the Ascendant, fifteen minutes are usually harmless. For the houses, they are not.
Is the rising sign more important than the Sun sign?
Neither is more important. What is true is that the Ascendant tends to be more recognisable from outside: other people describe you by your Ascendant and you describe yourself by your Sun, and that is where the feeling that others do not see who you are comes from.
