What an aspect is in the birth chart

An aspect is the distance between two pieces of the chart, measured in degrees — and that is what says whether they work together, ignore each other or fight. The previous series describe each piece on its own: the planet in the sign, the planet in the house. This one describes what happens between two of them.

There are five distances that tradition calls the major aspects: the conjunction (0°), the sextile (60°), the square (90°), the trine (120°) and the opposition (180°). Each has its own way of putting two pieces in contact, and none of them is good or bad — what exists is what each one charges and what each one delivers.

And there is the number almost no text gives: the orb. Two pieces at exactly 90° form a square; at 97°, they form nothing. And there is a reading order that changes everything, and that almost no site respects: the aspect comes last. It describes the relationship between two pieces, and there is no reading the relationship without knowing both. Whoever arrives here without having read each piece in the sign and in the house is reading the conversation without knowing who is speaking.

What Moon and Pluto mean together

The aspect between Moon and Pluto says the depth your bonds demand. The Moon is what a person needs in order to feel safe. Pluto is what takes apart and rebuilds. In contact, the two produce someone who cannot have a shallow bond: either it is deep, or it is not worth it — and that demand shows up before any conscious choice.

The conjunction of Moon and Pluto

The conjunction puts the depth inside the need: this person needs deeply. She notices what the other person is hiding, and early. She has a long emotional memory — she remembers the tone of a sentence said ten years ago. And she tends to have had a childhood relationship marked by a secret, a loss or badly shared power inside the house.

The cost is jealousy, and it is worth naming it plainly: it is not a lack of trust in the other person, it is fear of losing the ground she stands on inside. The fix starts by recognising that the feared thing is almost never the one that is happening.

The sextile and the trine give depth with no torment: the person reaches the bottom and comes back. She is the friend who can bear to hear the worst, the one who is not frightened by somebody else's crisis and the one who changes her life without falling to pieces. The intensity is in service of the bond, and not fighting it.

The cost is never having been forced to examine her own intensity. Whoever always knew how to use that force does not know what it does when it gets loose — and tends to find out at a moment when she loses something important and reacts in a way she does not recognise.

The square and the opposition set safety against power — and out of that fight comes a person able to love without controlling. The person clings, tests, investigates, and is then ashamed of having done it.
