What an aspect is in the birth chart

An aspect is the distance between two pieces of the chart, measured in degrees — and that is what says whether they work together, ignore each other or fight. The previous series describe each piece on its own: the planet in the sign, the planet in the house. This one describes what happens between two of them.

There are five distances that tradition calls the major aspects: the conjunction (0°), the sextile (60°), the square (90°), the trine (120°) and the opposition (180°). Each has its own way of putting two pieces in contact, and none of them is good or bad — what exists is what each one charges and what each one delivers.

And there is the number almost no text gives: the orb. Two pieces at exactly 90° form a square; at 97°, they form nothing. And there is a reading order that changes everything, and that almost no site respects: the aspect comes last. It describes the relationship between two pieces, and there is no reading the relationship without knowing both. Whoever arrives here without having read each piece in the sign and in the house is reading the conversation without knowing who is speaking.

What Jupiter and Pluto mean together

The aspect between Jupiter and Pluto marks the phases in which power grows in scale. Jupiter is what enlarges. Pluto is what takes apart and rebuilds, and it is the piece of power. In contact, the two produce concentration: a fortune that accumulates, an empire that forms, influence that goes from large to enormous.

And the orb requires the calculated chart — and Pluto is the slowest of them all: it is Jupiter's position that decides the phase, and it changes sign once a year.

The conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto

The conjunction joins enlargement and power: it is the phase in which the scale of what exists grows for good. They tend to be periods of concentration — of capital, of technology, of influence. Whoever is born in them tends to have ambition on a large scale, and does not find that odd.

The cost is that same concentration: what grows a great deal usually grows on top of something. For the person, the warning is the same on a smaller scale, and it depends on the house.

The sextile and the trine give power that builds: the scale grows and something stays standing. They are phases of large work that lasts — infrastructure, an institution, a company that outlives its founder. Whoever is born in them tends to be good at thinking in scale without getting lost.

The square and the opposition set growth against power — and out of that fight comes the limit somebody imposes on what grew too much. They are phases of conflict over control: a fight over resources, concentration that provokes a reaction, regulation that arrives late.
