What an aspect is in the birth chart

An aspect is the distance between two pieces of the chart, measured in degrees — and that is what says whether they work together, ignore each other or fight. The previous series describe each piece on its own: the planet in the sign, the planet in the house. This one describes what happens between two of them.

There are five distances that tradition calls the major aspects: the conjunction (0°), the sextile (60°), the square (90°), the trine (120°) and the opposition (180°). Each has its own way of putting two pieces in contact, and none of them is good or bad — what exists is what each one charges and what each one delivers.

And there is the number almost no text gives: the orb. Two pieces at exactly 90° form a square; at 97°, they form nothing. This blog uses 6 degrees for the major aspects, and outside that they are two pieces in the same chart, which is another thing. That is why an aspect is not found out from the date: it needs the calculated chart.

And there is a reading order that changes everything, and that almost no site respects: the aspect comes last. It describes the relationship between two pieces, and there is no reading the relationship without knowing both. Whoever arrives here without having read each piece in the sign and in the house is reading the conversation without knowing who is speaking.

What Venus and Jupiter mean together

The aspect between Venus and Jupiter says the size of what you want to receive. Venus is affection and pleasure. Jupiter is what enlarges everything it touches. In contact, the two produce someone generous, warm and of large appetite — for food, for people, for comfort and for promises.

It is the aspect tradition calls luck, and that is worth correcting: it is not luck, it is openness. Whoever expects the best behaves like someone who expects the best, and that changes what happens. What tradition leaves out is the bill.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: an aspect is a RELATIONSHIP, and not one more piece. It does not add a trait to your chart — it says how two traits already there get along with each other. And the bill is this: appetite has no brake of its own. The generosity that charms is the same one that promises what will not fit, spends what she does not have and eats what she does not need.

It is worth giving the number before any reading, because without it there is no aspect: this blog uses a 6-degree orb for the major aspects. Outside that they are two pieces in the same chart, which is another thing. And the orb requires the calculated chart — and Jupiter spends a year in each sign while Venus changes every month: it is Venus's position that decides whether there is an aspect.

The conjunction of Venus and Jupiter

The conjunction puts the enlargement inside pleasure: this person likes a great deal, and shows it. She is a good host, gives presents above budget and makes other people feel important with no effort. She is the one everybody wants at the party, and she knows it.

The cost is an excess of everything good: food, drink, spending, praise, promises. And the excess does not look like a problem on the day — it shows up on next month's bill and in the relationship where she promised more than she wanted to give.

The easy aspects: sextile and trine of Venus and Jupiter

The sextile and the trine give plenty with no damage: the person enjoys and does not ruin herself. She finds it easy to attract people and opportunities, likes sharing what she has and recovers well from loss. She is pleasant to be around, and that opens doors.

The cost is never having been forced to measure. Whoever always had plenty never built the ruler for how much is enough — and the day the plenty runs out catches her with no practice at economising.

The tense aspects: square and opposition of Venus and Jupiter

The square and the opposition set taste against appetite — and out of that fight comes a generous person who knows her own limit. The person spends what she does not have, promises what will not fit and says yes so as not to disappoint. Or the reverse: she refuses out of fear of her own appetite, and lives short of money with the means to loosen up.

The fix is numerical and unpoetic: a ceiling agreed beforehand, for spending and for commitments. Appetite does not obey intention; it obeys a written limit.

The easy aspect has a cost, and the tense one has a gift

This is the inversion most texts do not make, and it holds for every pair: what runs with no friction was never tested, and what bothers is what produces. The trine between Venus and Jupiter delivers the result with no effort — and for that reason the person usually does not build the muscle, and finds that out on the day the ease is not enough. And the square delivers the opposite: a person who has already paid for her own excess and who for that reason offers what she can deliver.

It matures when the person discovers that saying no is generous too. It usually happens after a yes given out of politeness that turned into months of obligation — and after realising the relationship would have survived the no.

Maturity here is not shrinking. It is the person offering with the same breadth and delivering everything she offered.

What the aspect between Venus and Jupiter does not say about you

It says how those two pieces get along, and not who you are. Jupiter spends a year in each sign, so its sign is almost a year-group thing; the aspect with your Venus is what is yours, and it changes within weeks.
