What an aspect is in the birth chart

An aspect is the distance between two pieces of the chart, measured in degrees — and that is what says whether they work together, ignore each other or fight. The previous series describe each piece on its own: the planet in the sign, the planet in the house. This one describes what happens between two of them.

There are five distances that tradition calls the major aspects: the conjunction (0°), the sextile (60°), the square (90°), the trine (120°) and the opposition (180°). Each has its own way of putting two pieces in contact, and none of them is good or bad — what exists is what each one charges and what each one delivers.

And there is the number almost no text gives: the orb. Two pieces at exactly 90° form a square; at 97°, they form nothing. And there is a reading order that changes everything, and that almost no site respects: the aspect comes last. It describes the relationship between two pieces, and there is no reading the relationship without knowing both. Whoever arrives here without having read each piece in the sign and in the house is reading the conversation without knowing who is speaking.

What Sun and Pluto mean together

The aspect between Sun and Pluto says the weight your presence carries without your having chosen it. The Sun is identity; Pluto is what takes apart and remakes. In contact, they produce a person who does not go unnoticed and who has already reinvented herself entirely at least once — almost always paying for it with a crisis nobody around her saw whole.

The conjunction puts the weight inside the identity: this person is intense, and did not choose to be. She provokes a strong reaction in whoever meets her — of approach or of retreat, almost never of indifference. She notices what others hide, and early. And she looks at a photo from ten years ago without recognizing the person.

The cost is that the force never switches off. She dominates the room without meaning to, insists until she wins and confuses being right with being obeyed — and this aspect's two faces, the one that commands and the one that dims itself, tend to alternate in the same life.

The sextile and the trine give power with no contest: the person makes things happen and nobody feels run over. She leads without imposing, withstands crisis with no drama and is the person others look for when things collapse. The intensity is in service, and not fighting with the environment.

The cost is the absence of any confrontation with her own force. Whoever never had to measure her own weight does not know how much it is, and usually finds out the worst way: by the effect she had on someone without noticing.

The square and the opposition set the identity against its own power — and it is from that fight that a person comes who knows the size of her own force. The person lives a difficult relationship with authority, on both sides: she reacts to whoever commands and commands without noticing.
