What Saturn says in your birth chart

Saturn is where you take longer, and where what you build stays. It is the area in which nothing came free — in which you felt insufficient early, held yourself to a higher standard than the people around you, and took years to get where whoever finds it easy gets in months. And it is, for the same reason, the area in which you end up genuinely good.

This series carries the same caveat as the previous one, and even stronger: you share the sign of Saturn with everybody born around your own age. And here is what hardly any text writes down: the anger of this placement is the least understood part of it, including by the person herself. Saturn in Aries usually comes from a childhood in which getting angry was forbidden, or was dangerous. What she calls patience is often a long postponement that comes out all at once, ten years later, at the wrong moment — and recognising that is what gives her back control over her own reaction.

It is worth repeating the caveat of this series before going on: you share this sign with whoever was born around the same time as you. • starts late what the others started early
• does not ask for help, and finds that normal

Notice what this list does not say. It does not say the person is passive or cowardly — two labels this placement carries and that describe the excess, not the placement. It says her initiative is built, not given.

What are the strengths of Saturn in Aries

The strength is firmness: this person does not give up on what she started. Since she takes time to go in, she does not go in out of enthusiasm, and what goes in by decision does not come out from tiredness.

In practice that turns into three useful things: an ability to endure a long process that almost nobody has; a courage that, being built, does not vanish at the first scare; and a real physical strength, which pays off in a trade, in sport and in any work that demands repeating without complaining.

That strength does best in a trade that demands endurance, sport, construction, technical command and any arrangement in which competence shows over time. And it does badly in a setting that demands a fast reaction and open dispute, a post won by shouting and anywhere whoever speaks first takes it.

What are the challenges of Saturn in Aries

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is restraint turning into harshness with her own body, and the deficiency is the person who gave up on this subject before it ever held her to account. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces — the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency —, and in Saturn the face of deficiency is no accident: it is the planet's signature. Saturn shrinks what it touches, and the commonest way of shrinking is to stop trying.

The excess is physical self-demand: the person trains too much, works until the body complains and treats tiredness as weakness. It also shows up as a coldness of command — she demands from others the same restraint she demands of herself, and does not notice she is asking for something rare.

The deficiency is the opposite and passes for realism: the person gave up on the subject and calls the giving up maturity. Here she is the person who does not act any more. After one time when she asserted herself and it went wrong, she decided initiative is not for her. She waits to be called, takes what is left and calls it calm, while the anger that is never spent turns into a symptom in the body.

Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: a courage that needs small, frequent training, and not one large decision. It is not solved by asking the person to loosen up — loosen up, here, is the wrong phrase. It is solved in scale: one disagreement said out loud per week, one request made without preparing it first, one thing begun on the day it was thought of — and that is what Saturn's house and the rest of the chart show.

How Saturn in Aries evolves over time

It matures when the person stops waiting to feel ready in order to act — and that swap is worth more than any attempt to learn to be spontaneous. The firmness goes on being the talent; what changes is that it stops arriving ten years after the moment it was useful.

And here lies the most recognisable turn of a whole biography: the return of Saturn, at around 29 and again at around 58. It is when it comes back to the degree it was at when you were born, and the subject of this sign charges the whole bill at once. Here the return usually comes as an enough: a departure, a confrontation put off for years, a decision the person takes alone and defends against everybody.

Anybody past thirty almost always recognises the phase between 28 and 31: the job that fell through, the relationship that ended or turned serious, the move nobody understood. It says where life charges slowly, not that you are going to fail there. It is the opposite: it is the only area in which the competence you build is not lost, because it did not come from ease. That is where the word punishment misleads.
