The sign of Saturn says HOW life makes its demands of you; the house says WHERE. They are two different questions, and in this series the second counts for more than the first — for the same reason it did in Jupiter's, and with even more force.

The sign of Saturn belongs to a whole two-and-a-half-year cohort. The house is yours alone. Two people born in the same week have the same Saturn in Capricorn — and one has it in the 6th house, where it becomes a body charged for overwork, and the other in the 7th, where it becomes a marriage that took fifteen years to happen. In practice that turns into three useful things: a creative competence built over years, which does not depend on fashion; a seriousness with children and with whoever is starting out, which shapes people; and an ability to finish a project, which is what most creative people do not have.

That strength does best in long-term authored work, teaching, direction, craftsmanship and any arrangement in which the work speaks before the person. And it does badly in a setting that demands constant enthusiasm, work of quick visibility and anywhere producing a lot counts for more than producing well.

What are the challenges of Saturn in the 5th house

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is seriousness turning into a life with no free pleasure at all, and the deficiency is the person who gave up on this area before it ever held her to account. It matures when the person signs what she made — and that signature is worth more than any attempt to improve it a bit more before showing it. The rigour goes on being the talent; what changes is that it stops being the reason for not starting.

And here lies the most recognisable turn of a whole biography: the return of Saturn, at around 29 and again at around 58. It is when it comes back to the degree it was at when you were born, and the subject of THIS HOUSE charges the whole bill at once. Here the return usually comes with work or with a child: a project that leaves the page, a child born or growing up, a romance that turns serious, or the first time she accepts being called by the name of what she does.

Maturity here is not learning to enjoy yourself more. It is the person coming to tell apart the rigour that improves the work from the rigour that prevents the start.
