Saturn is where you take longer, and where what you build stays. It is the area in which nothing came free — in which you felt insufficient early, held yourself to a higher standard than the people around you, and took years to get where whoever finds it easy gets in months. And it is, for the same reason, the area in which you end up genuinely good.
This series carries the same caveat as the previous one, and even stronger: you share the sign of Saturn with everybody born around your own age. And she is the one who ends up becoming the root of a whole family — the house where everybody gathers, the person who sorts things out, the one who carries everybody else's bad phase. It is a competence that only exists in whoever needed it.
In practice that turns into three useful things: a real autonomy, which gets through any hard phase without collapse; an ability to care that is firm instead of sentimental; and a long memory of what hurts other people, which makes her somebody who is trusted.
That strength does best in professional care, health, teaching children, running a home and a family, property and any arrangement in which creating a base is the work. And it does badly in an unstable setting with no bond, an arrangement that demands moving city all the time and anywhere nobody looks after anybody.
What are the challenges of Saturn in Cancer
There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is self-sufficiency turning into a door that does not open, and the deficiency is the person who gave up on this subject before it ever held her to account. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces — the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency —, and in Saturn the face of deficiency is no accident: it is the planet's signature. Saturn shrinks what it touches, and the commonest way of shrinking is to stop trying.
The excess is not letting anybody in: the person does everything, bears everything and shares nothing, and then feels alone without understanding why. It also shows up as domestic control — the house her way, the care her way, and nobody manages to actually help.
The deficiency is the opposite and passes for realism: the person gave up on the subject and calls the giving up maturity. Here she is the person who got tired of holding it all. After years of being everybody's adult, she dropped the subject: she does not care for anyone, does not visit, wants neither home nor root.
